7th Grade Course Descriptions

Language Arts 7
Required
Building knowledge through the four columns of language arts: reading (both literature and informational text), writing, listening and speaking according to the Kansas State Standards. Students will build strong content knowledge, comprehend as well as analyze, search for evidence, use technology and digital media effectively and usefully, and come to understand other perspectives and cultures. Students will produce an argumentative writing piece which will include their claims with supporting evidence. Students will improve their quality of writing, speaking, listening, and reading skills through real-world applications in our curriculum.

Math 7
Required
7th grade mathematics students will analyze and solve real-world and mathematical problems using ratios and proportional relationships, positive and negative rational numbers, expressions and equations, geometric figures (surface area and volume), and statistics and probability. Foundational skills acquired in 6th grade math (especially multiplying and dividing fractions and decimals) will be continued and refined throughout the course. Math 7 is designed to help students develop skills directly applicable to real-world situations through conceptual exploration.

Placement in this math class will be determined using spring FastBridge assessment scores, Kansas State Assessment scores, and current math classroom performance. This course is designed to develop logical thinking skills necessary for daily living. It includes a careful study of arithmetic, with attention to basic skills and structure. 7+ develops the concepts of real numbers, equations, relations, and functions in preparation for Algebra I. Math 7+ will accelerate student learning through 1.5 years of instruction in one year.

History 7
Required
Seventh Grade Kansas History is an 18-week required course. This course traces the evolution of Kansas from primeval or native Kansas, through settlement and statehood. The course concludes with Kansas today and the governmental aspects of Kansas.
Seventh Grade World Geography is an 18-week required course. The students study the relationships between peoples and places, and human and physical environments. Through this course, students gain an understanding of global interdependence.Instructional Resource

Healthy Living 7
Required
This is a year-long required course and the intent of this course is to reinforce goals and objectives for teaching and learning behavior that contributes to a healthy lifestyle and improved quality of life for all students. This course is required for all 6th-grade, 7th-grade, and 8th-grade students and includes health education and physical education. These two components complement each other as students learn to be healthy and physically active for a lifetime.

7th Grade Science builds upon the foundations laid in 6th Grade. This course continues the studies of Earth and Space, Life, and Physical Science. This course will include the topics of ecosystems, properties of matter and energy, and geoscience processes. Students will engage in hands-on learning activities, lab activities, and utilize current technology programs and applications to master their learning of the content.

Art 7
Our middle school Visual Arts classes introduce students to the various forms of the visual arts, such as painting, drawing, sculpting and more. Students learn how to look at a work of art, identify and compare key characteristics in artworks, and understand the role that art has played throughout history. Through hands-on studio activities, virtual museum tours, discussion and research, learners develop an overall appreciation for the art they encounter in their daily lives and the ability to manipulate a variety of art mediums. As students participate in this class each year, they will be individually mentored to explore and extend their artistic ability, honing both their observation and technical skills.

Family and Consumer Science II
Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) is a semester-long course that helps students make informed decisions about their well-being, relationships, and resources to achieve a high quality of life. This course covers many areas, including foods and nutrition, sewing and textiles, and child development. The skills learned are applied through hands-on activities such as projects and labs within the classroom. Some materials may be required to be purchased.

World Language Exploration 7/8
World Language Exploration is a semester-long course where the student will begin or continue to learn basic conversation and culture primarily in Spanish and also French. Students will briefly explore American Sign Language and culture as well as independently study a language of their choice online.

Intro to Spanish 7/8

Intro to Spanish is an exciting and engaging course designed to further introduce middle school students to the rich and vibrant world of the Spanish language and culture. This course provides a solid foundation in the fundamentals of Spanish language acquisition. Students will be well-prepared to continue to Spanish 1 after successful completion of this course. (Pending BOE approval)

Computer Science 7
The class will feature computer science skills that are foundational to program coding and app development. Students will also continue to fine-tune their keyboarding skills and become strong users of many Google Apps. Students of all skill sets will be able to learn programming skills. If you are a first-time programmer or an experienced programmer, you will be challenged at your level to explore more and more challenging themes and skills in computer programming. Language explored is Python.

Engineering Explorations 7
Students will explore and expand their understanding of careers in Mechanical, Electrical, and Structural engineering. They will apply CAD and math skills to create scaled designs and calculate different types of energy transfers. Students will use the Engineering Design Process to complete project challenges that will require them to apply scientific principles to both form and function. They will practice problem-solving strategies and reflective writing to complete hands-on projects and summarize their learning.

Band 7
This group is made up of seventh grade band members with at least one year of experience. Basic fundamentals are reinforced, theory necessary to this level is learned, and students are always improving their technical proficiency. Practice time is a required part of the assessment in this class and should be expected. Marching band and concert band will be introduced in this class.

Concert Chorus
This is an elective course consisting of a non-selective ensemble for those students interested in vocal technique. A wide variety of songs are studied. This class encourages students to discover, explore and develop talents in vocal music. The choir will participate in contest and present three performances.

Select Chorus
Prerequisite: Teacher recommendation required
This year-long course is for a select group of outstanding students who demonstrate a high level of mastery of choral music at the middle school level and wish to continue at an accelerated rate. Emphasis is on vocal production, interpretation and performance. Music of a wide variety of styles, cultures and time periods will be studied and performed. Students have the opportunity to sing solos and participate in small ensembles. This group presents many performances in and outside the school system, and demonstrates excellence in choral achievement. There will be some after school rehearsals and evening performances - students will be expected to participate in ALL after school rehearsals and evening performances.
