Language Arts 6
Required
In sixth grade, the importance of communication through writing will be emphasized, noting that it is a life-long skill that will be continually developed. In sixth grade, we will recognize the importance of the integration of reading and writing. Reading may be used from time to time as a springboard for writing. The writing process will continue to be developed and applied in the student’s own writing. Use of the standard conventions of grammar, usage, spelling, capitalization, and punctuation will continue to be reviewed and developed. Reading comprehension and vocabulary skills and strategies previously taught will continue to be reinforced and expanded. Students will read daily and respond to different types of literature, authors, and genres orally, as well as in writing. Strategies for reading and studying the content areas will also be developed.

Sixth grade earth science course is designed to enable students to look at the Earth as a set of closely coupled systems. Students will receive an overview of common strands in earth science including the study of the planet Earth and its place in space. Students will learn about water on the earth and a study of the stars and space travel. The topics in this class include Earth Resources, Erosion, Deposition, Weathering, Plate Tectonics, Weather & Atmosphere, Earth in Space, and Space & Beyond. Students will study the relationship between science, our environment, and our everyday world.

Social Studies 6
Required
The focus of the sixth-grade social studies curriculum is Ancient Civilizations. The course covers the history, geography, cultural influence, religion and relationships of Early Humans, Egypt, Mesopotamia, China, India, Greece, Rome, Olmec, Maya, Aztec and Inca. We work through activities and learning experiences to help students connect ancient civilizations to our modern world.

Healthy Living
Required
This is a year-long required course and the intent of this course is to reinforce goals and objectives for teaching and learning behavior that contributes to a healthy lifestyle and improved quality of life for all students. This course is required for all 6th-grade, 7th-grade, and 8th-grade students and includes health education and physical education. These two components complement each other as students learn to be healthy and physically active for a lifetime.

Art 6
Art at the sixth-grade level is a semester-long course and focuses on the exploration of the basic elements and principles of design. Students have the opportunity to use a variety of media and explore different types of subject matter. Students learn how skills and knowledge from other disciplines can be useful in creating and learning about art.

Computer Science 6
Computer Science 6 is a semester-long course and will feature computer science skills that are foundational to program coding and app development. Students will also continue to fine-tune their keyboarding skills and become strong users of many Google Apps. Students of all skill sets will be able to learn programming skills. If you are a first-time programmer or an experienced programmer, you will be challenged at your level to explore more and more challenging themes and skills in computer programming. Languages explored are HTML, CSS, and Javascript.

Engineering Explorations 6
Students will be introduced to careers in Mechanical, Electrical, and Civil engineering and explore the Engineering Design Process. Students will learn what a career in each field will entail, and what skills/understanding they will need to have if they chose to pursue that pathway. Students will complete several projects that will teach them to use a variety of problem-solving strategies and understand when/how to utilize them. They will learn how math is applied to design and is a form of communication throughout engineering fields. Students will practice reflective writing to make sense of their problem-solving and to uncover what they have learned from their experiences.

Foreign Language Exploration 6
Foreign Language Exploration (FLEX) is a semester-long course where the student will begin or continue to learn basic conversation and culture primarily in Spanish and also French. Students will briefly explore American Sign Language and culture as well as independently study a language of their choice online.

Family and Consumer Science I
Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) is a semester-long course that helps students make informed decisions about their well-being, relationships, and resources to achieve a high quality of life. This course covers many areas, including communication skills, foods and nutrition, sewing and textiles, and positive relationships with families, friendships, and self. The skills learned are applied through hands-on activities such as projects and labs within the classroom. Some materials may be required to be purchased.

Concert Chorus
This course may be taken for a semester or for a full year and is designed for students who wish to explore and develop vocal music talents. This course consists of a non-selective ensemble for those students interested in vocal technique. A wide variety of songs are studied. This class encourages students to discover, explore and develop talents in vocal music.

Beginning Orchestra
This is a year-long orchestra class introducing the basic concepts and techniques in string instrument performance on violin, viola, cello and upright bass. The emphasis is on building a solid foundation of music theory, posture development and performance skills in an ensemble setting.

Band 6
This is a yearlong course where students develop the skills to perform on instruments such as flute, trumpet, clarinet, trombone, and percussion. This beginning level band class will teach students the fundamentals of technique, music theory, and ensemble skills that are needed to become a thriving musician.
