• Prairie Creek Elementary is known for its students’ outstanding academic achievement. The school has received the Kansas Standard of Excellence in reading, writing, math, and science, in all grades tested for four consecutive years. In 2008, Prairie Creek took top honors from the State Board of Education in receiving the Governor’s Achievement Award. Out of 800 schools across Kansas, Prairie Creek Elementary was one of 43 schools recognized for their outstanding achievement.

Academic achievement begins with teachers looking at data on each individual student. Data used to compile a student’s profile include MAP (measures of academic progress in reading, language arts, math and science), DIBELS, reading placement tests, math placement tests, pre-writing assessment, and a phonics screener. The teachers bring all their individual student data to a data team meeting to discuss where each of their students are at academically. The teachers then develop lesson plans and provide instruction to meet the needs of each student using a multi-tier support system. The data team meets at least three times a year to chart growth and document interventions that are being successful with each student.

Prairie Creek Elementary continues to strive for excellence. The next goal is to identify and provide the students with the skills to be successful in the 21st century.
