My name is Ashley Lanyi and I am the school counselor at Prairie Creek Elementary.
I have an undeniable passion for school counseling. As a child of parents in education, I grew up volunteering for school events and became very comfortable in the elementary environment. I received a Bachelor of Arts in Communication at Arizona State University and a Master of Science in School Counseling at Emporia State University. Things that light me up include: American Sign Language, art, and reading.
I have provided counselor lessons, individual counseling, group counseling, and crisis response for children ages 4-18. I pride myself on my ability to strengthen relationships between schools and families, decrease conflict between peers, and provide students with a trusted adult at school.
I look forward to getting to know your student as they learn and grow. Student wellness is my passion. I am grateful to be a part of this community.

Do School Counselors provide therapy?
School Counselors do not provide therapy. Although school counselors are highly trained, we are not able to diagnose or treat mental illness as a therapist would in a private practice or outside agency. If a student needs long-term or intensive services, school counselors can refer them to a professional in the community who can help.

What parents should know about counselor confidentiality?
A student’s right to privacy and confidentiality is the basis for an effective counseling relationship. Confidentiality is balanced with an understanding of the parents’ legal and inherent rights to be the guiding voice in their children’s lives. Confidentiality ensures that school counselors will not share students’ disclosures with others except when the student authorizes it or when there is a clear and present danger to the student and/or to other persons.
