FAQs
-
Do School Counselors provide therapy?
School Counselors do not provide therapy. Although school counselors are highly trained, we are not able to diagnose or treat mental illness as a therapist would in a private practice or outside agency. If a student needs long-term or intensive services, school counselors can refer them to a professional in the community who can help.

What parents should know about counselor confidentiality?
A student’s right to privacy and confidentiality is the basis for an effective counseling relationship. Confidentiality is balanced with an understanding of the parents’ legal and inherent rights to be the guiding voice in their children’s lives. Confidentiality ensures that school counselors will not share students’ disclosures with others except when the student authorizes it or when there is a clear and present danger to the student and/or to other persons.
