OLATHE -- Spring Hill High School's Adiel Garcia and Luke Torrez advanced to the quarterfinals of the KSHSAA 5A State Debate tournament over the weekend, earning them a fourth-place finish in 5A.
Garcia and Torrez went a perfect 6-0 in the preliminary rounds. In the Octafinal round, they defeated a team from Salina South; in quarterfinals, they lost to a team from DeSoto, who went on to be state champions.
Also competing at state were Max Pacheco and Kailey Howell. This duo went 3-3 in prelims and just missed breaking to the Octafinal rounds.
Thirty-six teams competed in 5A State Debate at Olathe North over the weekend. It was Garcia's, Pacheco's, and Torrez's third time competing at State Debate.
