Summary

The Spring Hill School District Board of Education met on October 7, 2024, to discuss multiple agenda items, including recognitions, an update on student assessments, insights into the Student Resource Officer (SRO) program, and a discussion on student cell phone usage. Recognitions:

The meeting opened with the recognition of USD 230 Horizon Award winners Brock LaPlante, a high school science teacher, and Jessica Camplain, a fourth-grade teacher at Spring Hill Elementary. Both educators were celebrated for their excellence in the profession.

 

The Board also celebrated the district’s commitment to safety, acknowledging the increase in Student Resource Officers (SROs) from two to three. A video chronicling a "Day in the Life" of a school resource officer was presented, highlighting their important role in the safety and security of district schools.

Strategic Plan Update on Student Success

Dr. Erin Smith, Director of Teaching and Learning, presented an update on student success, covering results from the Kansas state assessments, ACT scores, and Advanced Placement (AP) exam performance. The Board noted continued success with above-average state performance in math, English language arts, and science. Cassie Barton, Executive Director of Insight, presented an update on the 2023-2024 achievement data.

English Language Learner (ELL) Program Overview

The Board received an update on the ELL program, which has grown significantly recently. The number of ELL students and languages spoken within the district has increased dramatically, requiring additional screening and services. The ELL team outlined the challenges of managing this growth with limited resources but highlighted their commitment to student success.

Student Cell Phone Usage Presentation

The Board revisited the discussion on student cell phone policies, reviewing data collected from district teachers regarding cell phone use in classrooms. Most teachers reported that cell phones do not cause significant disruptions, and no further action needs to be taken at this time.

Approval of Consent Agenda

The Board approved the consent agenda, which included personnel items, renewal of Parchment for Spring Hill High School, and early graduation requests.
