Special Edition from the Superintendent, 9/20/2024

School Year
Today marks completion of Day 26 in the 2024/25 school year. As many readers know, the “Link’d In" is published generally every two weeks. However, when warranted a ‘Special Edition’ is sent to press.

As all of you know, the topic of school safety continues to make headlines across the region and nation. USD 230 has not been immune from reported alleged threats. Any and all alleged threats are investigated in coordination with local law enforcement and all have been determined to be unsubstantiated and not directed to any of our schools. A couple of repeated themes form the basis behind each alleged threat include:

  1. A list shared on social media suggested that certain schools, including Spring Hill High School, Spring Hill Middle School, and Spring Hill Elementary, were potential targets for a possible threat. However, the investigation found that the lists that contained the Spring Hill Schools were actually NOT directed towards any USD 230 Spring Hill Schools but rather Spring Hill Schools in ANOTHER state. There are many schools across the nation that share a school name of “Spring Hill."
  2. A vague social media post that references a possible grand plan to do harm when individuals exit a school building. This particular post has been investigated by law enforcement and has been found to have originated in another state. Although the post lacks specific details about a school or date, it continues to circulate widely on social media, making it difficult for authorities to contain. Once again though, our local investigation determined that our USD 230 Schools are not a direct target of the vague post and that our campuses are safe.

USD 230 remains committed to keeping our campuses safe for students, staff, and visitors. In the past two weeks, there has been a significant rise in reported threats. While we've worked hard to communicate promptly, there have been instances where our response could have been more timely. We are committed to improving our communication protocols moving forward and know that every threat is taken seriously and addressed with the utmost care and professionalism. Urgent updates are communicated through email and I ask that you confirm your email address listed in the Skyward student database is current.

The Spring Hill Schools Board of Education prioritizes the safety and well-being of all students and staff. In fact, this week, the board held a special meeting to review safety processes in place. Each member is dedicated to implementing comprehensive safety measures, including secure facilities and thorough emergency protocols.

I’ve said before, it takes ALL of us working together and maintaining open lines of communication to be successful in our efforts to maintain strong and safe schools. I am confident that our campuses are safe for our students and staff. Please take this opportunity to remind your student(s) if they hear or see anything, they should tell you, share with a school employee, or even local law enforcement.
