Making the World a Better Place, 04/15/2022

Sixth grade STEM students have been learning how engineers make the world a better place. After exploring the concepts of universal design and inclusive play, students have been using their computer-aided design skills to make models of inclusive playgrounds. They had to consider ways to make the area physically, socially, and cognitively inclusive. They also had to consider sensory differences and how to make the area intuitive.

Students really had to think beyond themselves and learn to design with others in mind. To aid them in this, they had a special guest speaker give them feedback. Trish Farrington is the mother of their classmate, Ethan. Ethan uses a wheelchair and other adaptive devices to navigate his world. Ms. Farrington spoke to students this past Wednesday about Ethan's needs and how engineering has benefited him. She also viewed their designs and gave them feedback based on her and Ethan's experiences. Inclusiveness creates an atmosphere where everyone of all abilities, including Ethan, can interact with each other, explore, learn, imagine, and play together. By making engineering changes that allow Ethan to access the world, everyone benefits from him being included.
