Springtime Brings Kansas State Assessments, 03/31/2022

The calendar tells us it is springtime, but Old Man Winter isn’t ready to walk away just yet. Regardless, spring is when students across the state are beginning to take state assessments in order to measure proficiency. These tests align with the Kansas statewide curriculum standards. The Kansas legislature requires students in grades 3-8, and grade 10 to take English language arts and mathematics assessments. Students in grades 5, 8, and 11 are also tested in science.

The teachers and students at WSMS are currently preparing to take their assessments. What can you do to help your student prepare for their assessments and reduce stress? Here are a few helpful tips:

  • Exercise. This is a natural way to reduce anxiety and stress for the mind and body. Laugh, shoot some hoops, dance, or go for a walk. Think outside the box and just have some fun.
  • Rest. Make sure your student gets a good night’s rest the night before. Cut off screen-time at least 30 minutes prior to bedtime to ensure your student has an opportunity to wind down from the day.
  • Diet. Be sure that your students are fueling up with a well-balanced breakfast to give them the energy and focus they will need during the day.

Please note that the daily schedule will change a bit over the next two weeks to help accommodate testing. It will be as follows:
