Earthquakes are one of the earth’s most destructive forces. Seismic waves throughout the ground can destroy buildings. Architects and engineers work hand in hand to design and construct buildings to withstand the energy produced by earthquakes. In preparation for their upcoming earthquake tower project, sixth grade students at WSMS are learning about primary, secondary, and surface waves this week in Mrs. Torrez’s science class. Each of these wave types can be generated at fault lines causing an earthquake to erupt. To better help the students understand surface waves, Mrs. Torrez conducted a slinky demonstration earlier this week. Through this demonstration, students were able to see the motion of the waves and grasp an understanding that surface waves are the most destructive and take the most time to travel. This knowledge will help them in the planning phase of designing and constructing their own towers at the end of the week. Stay tuned as results of testing the towers will take place next week!
