SHMS Track Season Forecast is Bright, 04/04/2022
Track competition begins this week and students are hoping for consistently sunny weather. Practices began February 28th and each week since has seen weather ranging from snow to rain to high wind to bright sunshine. But that hasn’t dampened the enthusiasm of the over 70 students participating this spring. They can be seen giving it their all whether practice is held in the stadium or in the hallway.
According to head boys track coach Dalton Maples, 43 boys are out for track this year. “This season should be a great one, with such a large number of students participating. I am excited for them to improve in their races &/or events as the year goes on. Getting new PRs is one of the best feelings in track! ”
Girls’ head coach Taylor Woodward says, including managers, she has 44 girls participating in track. “ I am excited to help our 8th graders continue to grow and develop in their events, and to see our 7th graders try new things and find events they enjoy. I am looking forward to a fun season of watching these kids build friendships and find a love for Track & Field!”
Meets start Tuesday, April 5th with the Mavericks competing in Louisburg. On April 12th the team will be in Baldwin and they travel to Paola on April 19th. SHMS will host two meets: one on Monday, April 25th at Spring Hill Middle School and again on Tuesday, May 3rd. The May 3rd meet will be held at Spring Hill High School.
In addition, some students will be chosen to participate in the Wellsville Relays on Thursday, April 28th. Coach Taylor explained that those students will be the “top three students in each field event, along with our top runners & team players who have worked hard all season and are willing to try new events to better the team!” Coach Maples looks forward to the Wellsville relays. “It is a very unique track meet. There are field events and relays, no open races. They also have extra relays so it is a high-energy fun meet. Kids get to be in new relays and compete more as a team for this meet against seven other schools.” Finally, the season rounds out on May 6th and 7th with the Frontier League meet.
Be sure to get out and cheer on the Mavericks this track season!
