Scholars’ Bowl preps for Season, 01/21/2022

What’s the buzz? Oh, it’s just Scholars’ Bowl season!

A dozen SHMS 7th & 8th graders have begun practicing during Advisory three times a week for scholars’ bowl competition. Using a buzzer system exactly like a real meet, the coach runs the students through questions from the practice binder.

Mrs. Brownlee, SHMS scholars’ bowl coach, said all interested students tried out for Scholars’ Bowl by completing a written test made up of sample questions from the practice binder.  Qualifying students were then invited to join the team.

For each meet, the twelve students are divided into an A team and a B team similar to Varsity and Junior Varsity teams; the teams are not grade specific.  With five students as a team each round, both SHMS teams rotate through all six of their players throughout the day. Each meet will have between ten and twenty schools participating, so students see lots of competition.

This year’s season consists of two virtual and two in-person meets, and wraps up by spring break. The first meet, hosted by Prairie View Middle School, will be held virtually on February 3rd. February 8th sees the team competing virtually in a meet hosted by Pittsburg Community Middle School. On February 23rd, the teams will travel to Ottawa Middle School. Finally, on February 28th they will travel to Prairie View Middle School.
