Maverick School Play Prepares for Opening Night, 03/02/2023
SHMS Mavericks are ready to show you Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Middle School (But Were Too Busy Being Stuffed in a Locker To Ask). The play, which is showing Friday, March 3rd at 7 PM and Saturday, March 4th at 2 PM, is the culmination of eight weeks of rehearsals and set design for the thirty students involved.
Time to prepare was a big challenge. Rehearsals were held only two days a week as many of the cast and crew members are involved in multiple after-school activities. Crew members even came in on their extended weekend to work on the set. A true time-saver was having the set from MAPA’s last production that they could paint and decorate with minimal modifications.
Although the plot sounds pretty self explanatory, that’s the beauty of theater. “There are a few little twists to surprise the audience,” commented director Cortney Kinyon.
“The play is fun and quirky. I was so impressed by the students' hard work to make the performances a success,” assistant director Darby Weaver said. “I think a lot of students were surprised by how much they could contribute without having to perform. So much goes into set designing, lighting, sound board, curtains, advertising, makeup.” Students discover that theater productions are truly a group effort where no one succeeds without the support of everyone else.
Admission to the shows is $5. However, with a canned food donation, audience members can get in for $4. Food donations will be delivered to the Spring Hill Food Pantry.
