Science Olympiad Team Strong Showing in 1st Meet, 11/10/2023

WSMS Science Olympiad team members and supporters await the results of the competition.Science Olympiad is back to compete in the 2023-24 season. The 6th-9th grade team is coached by Computer Science teacher, Mr. Brendan Clary again this year. Science Olympiad is an all-day event that presents students with hour-long science based challenges that can include performing labs, building structures, and taking tests. Each student can compete in up to three events. This past weekend, the team traveled to Pioneer Trail Middle School to compete against 20 other schools in their first competition of the school year. 

 

The team is comprised of 23 students including four students that moved onto high school this year. Stallions competed in 23 different events and represented WSMS well earning them a 4th place finish overall and 11 individual ribbons or medals in the following categories: 

 

  • 1st in Dynamic Planet - Hannah Mathy and Aadith George 
  • 3rd in Ecology - Lily Falcetto and Jordan Engle
  • 3rd in Disease Detectives - Zofia Spiewacki and Hannah Mathy
  • 3rd in Air Trajectory - Lucas Satchell and Owen Schnell
  • 4th in Forestry - Lily Falcetto and Liam Jones
  • 4th in Reach for the Stars - Lily Falcetto and Reagan Soard
  • 5th in Flight - William Azevedo and Miles Obbink
  • 5th in Microbe Mission - Logan Engle and Owen Schnell
  • 6th in Tower - Brooklyn Azevedo and Jared Gillam
  • 6th in Road Scholar - Lily Falcetto and Flynn Jones
  • 6th in Crime Busters - Zofia Spiewacki and Hannah Mathy

 

Congratulations to all of the participants in a strong showing to kick off the season.

 

The team will be competing in three more events in the coming months. They will attend the Pembroke Hill Invitational on December 2, Mill Creek Invitational on January 14, and the Northeast Kansas Regional competition on February 24th at Johnson County Community College. The top 50% of teams advance to the state competition in April held at Wichita State University.
