SHHS Weighted Grades & Latin Honor System for 2024-25, 04/15/2024

Spring Hill Schools is excited to share an important update regarding our academic program at Spring Hill High. The Spring Hill Board of Education approved the adoption of weighted grades and implemented the Latin Honor System for high school graduation at the November 13, 2023 meeting. These will go into effect for all high school students in the 2024-25 school year.

Weighted Grades

Weighted grades are designed to recognize the rigor of advanced courses and provide additional GPA points for honors and Advanced Placement (AP) courses. This adoption aims to better reflect the academic achievements of our students and encourage them to challenge themselves with more rigorous coursework.

Weighted grades will be implemented for all honors, AP and dual credit courses taken at the high school, starting in the 2024-25 school year. The additional GPA points for weighted courses will be reflected in students' overall GPAs. Students enrolled in honors, AP, or dual credit courses during the 2021-22, 2022-23, or 2023-24 school years will receive weighted credit for these courses on their high school transcript.

GPA Formula/Calculation = Total # of points earned / Total # of courses attempted

Unweighted

  • A = 4.0
  • B = 3.0
  • C = 2.0
  • D = 1.0
  • F = 0.0

Weighted

  • A = 5.0
  • B = 4.0
  • C = 3.0
  • D = 2.0
  • F = 0.0

Spring Hill High currently offers 20 courses that will receive a weight, with the plan to expand offerings for students in the future.

Latin Honor System

The introduction of the Latin Honor System is a positive step towards acknowledging and celebrating academic excellence. The Latin Honor System traditionally includes designations such as cum laude, magna cum laude, and summa cum laude, which will be awarded based on a student's cumulative GPA.

Latin honors will be awarded based on cumulative GPA, starting in the 2024-25 school year. The designations will be as follows: cum laude (“with praise”), magna cum laude (“with great praise”), and summa cum laude (“with highest praise”).

Recognition Level - Cumulative GPA

  • Summa Cum Laude - 4.2+
  • Magna Cum Laude - 4.1+
  • Cum Laude - 4.0+

These levels will be re-evaluated at the end of one year, three years, and five years to further refine our set criteria.

Latin Honors System Recognition

  1. All three levels denoted in the Graduation Program.
  2. Students earn cords of different colors.
  3. Magna Cum Laude & Cum Laude stand to be recognized at Graduation.
  4. Summa Cum Laude names read and receive plaque and/or medallion on stage at Graduation.

We believe that these updates will not only provide a more accurate representation of our students' academic accomplishments but also motivate them to pursue more challenging courses throughout their high school journey.

We appreciate your ongoing support and collaboration as we strive to enhance the educational experience for our students. If you have any questions about weighted grades or the Latin Honors system, please contact a member of the Spring Hill High counseling or administration team.
