Magical Learning in a Tipi!, 10/16/2024

Magical Learning in a Tipi!First graders had a hands-on opportunity to learn about Native Americans and their homes. Students heard from a Johnson County Parks and Recreation officer who taught them all about Native Americans that lived in Kansas and how those tribes built their homes. First graders learned that different types of homes were constructed based on the materials that each tribe could find in their region. Students discovered how the people of the tribes worked together in their daily life. Then, first graders used their teamwork skills to help construct a life-sized tipi. They learned about ways Native Americans kept their tipis warm or cool without the modern-day luxury of heaters and air conditioning. Students were able to lay on a buffalo hide inside the tipi and discuss the different traditions of the Native Americans.
