Herndon wins SHMS 2022-23 Spelling Bee 11/18/2023

Herndon & Vogliardo with trophies

SHMS held its annual spelling bee on November 15th and 17th. 6th grader Carter Herndon walked away the champion after defeating 14 other students in a competition held in the auditorium during Advisory. The winning word was ‘pioneered’.  Carter (right in photo) now advances to the Johnson county spelling bee which will be held February 4th. Further details will be shared as they are made available.

SHMS Spelling bee runner up is 8th grader Gavin Vogliardo (left in photo). He will be the alternate speller if Herndon can not attend the Johnson county spelling bee.

Students interested in participating in the spelling bee first take a grade level spelling test. The top five scoring spellers from each grade advance to the school-wide bee. The spelling bee was announced by 8th grade ELA teacher Molly Dugan and judged by 7th grade ELA teacher Candace Sweetwood and 6th grade ELA teacher Kenna Rambo.
