All-School Spelling Bee
Every year, students from all walks of life have the opportunity to participate in the Scripps National Spelling Bee, one of the nation's oldest and most iconic competitions. They progress from classroom to cafeteria, from auditorium to civic center, delighting friends, family, sponsors and fans, just as millions of other students have done before them. The Spring Hill Middle championship advances to the Johnson County Spelling Bee held in January. Competing in the State-National Spelling Bee is the ultimate goal for our Mavericks!

Continental Mathematics League
Each year, selected sixth grade students will be invited to participate in the Continental Mathematics League, a problem-solving competition. The students will participate in the EUCLIDEAN DIVISION, which requires above-average reading comprehension and analytical reasoning capabilities. The five meets will be held once a month from November-March and will consist of a 30-minute test in which each student independently answers six questions. The top six scores on the test will be the team’s score for each meet.

Geography Bee
Each year, the National Geographic Magazine sponsors a geography bee contest. The middle school holds grade level geography bees. The winners at the grade level compete to determine the SHMS finalist. This student will complete a written test which will be mailed to National Geographic Magazine and may qualify at the state and national level. The winner, also, has a chance to win a $25,000 college scholarship.

Robotics
Activities incorporate Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) while programing robots to perform various tasks and movements. Students develop collaboration and problem-solving skills while working as a group. The goal of the activity is for students to utilize the STEM concepts to program the robot for the completion of simple to complex functions. The Robotics club will attend area competitions as available.

Scholars Bowl
This is an academic competition that includes aspects of math, science, history, sports, and other subject areas. A scholars bowl team is typically made up of four members with each having an equal opportunity to respond to questions.
