USD 230 BOE Meeting Recap

The Spring Hill School Board of Education met Jan. 10, 2022 at the District Administrative Center to discuss several items. The following are some important highlights from the meeting:

BOE Members:

Three newly elected Board of Education members were sworn in at the beginning of the meeting. Sharon Mitchell was sworn in as Board member in Position 7, Area 2. Nicole Melius was sworn in as a Board member in Position 4, Area 1. Keith Ewing was sworn in as a Board member in Position 6, Area 3.


The Board of Education members elected their president and vice president for this year. With a 6 - 0 vote, Doug Updike was chosen to continue as Board president. With a 6 - 0 vote, Sharon Mitchell was selected for Board vice president.

Construction Updates:

Director of Construction & Safety Tim Meek shared construction updates to the Board. The construction for middle school #3 is on schedule and is set to open Fall 2023 as planned. For images and additional detail, presentation slides are available on the BoardDocs website.

KASB Superintendent Search:

The Board selected KASB as the designated firm to carry out a superintendent search for USD 230 at their special meeting Dec. 22, 2021. The Board, with a 6 - 0 vote, will hold a special meeting Jan. 18, 2022 at 5:30 p.m. with KASB to discuss the timeline of the superintendent search. This meeting is open to the public and will be broadcast on YouTube.

Middle School #3 Name & Colors:

Director of Communication and Education Engagement Christopher Villarreal presented the middle school #3 survey that went out to students and parents to the Board. With 459 student and 257 parent responses, the recommendation based on the results is for the name to be Forest Spring Middle School, and colors to be purple, forest green and white.


The recommendation will come back at a future meeting as an action item. The mascot selection process will take place with students in Fall 2022. Click here to view the full presentation.

Recognitions:

The Board recognized Spring Hill Early Learning Academy teacher Alyson Daniels on being named a 2022 Kansas Horizon Award recipient. Only 32 first-year educators were selected by the Kansas State Department of Education for their exemplary performance in the classroom.


In honor of School Board Appreciation Month, Superintendent Dr. Wayne Burke recognized the Board for their dedication and service to the staff and students of USD 230.


Rylee Serpen, SHHS senior, was recognized as the 2022 Spring Hill on the Move T-Shirt design winner. The winning design is available on the BoardDocs website.


Director of Communication and Education Engagement Christopher Villarreal recognized Annabelle Davis, SHHS journalism student, for the article written on fellow SHHS student Lorelei Harris in the Winter ‘22 edition of the SHS Magazine.

Superintendent/Student Advisory Council:

Coral Callen (SHHS) and Quorynn Harris (SHMS) gave an update on their last Superintendent/Student Advisory Council meeting to the Board:

  • Director of Nutrition Services Jayci Dalton shared information with the group about nutrition guidelines and availability of food for school meals.

  • The SHHS Winter Homecoming dance will be Saturday, Feb. 5, 2022.

  • The current changes to Bronco Assistance at SHHS and the reasons behind it were communicated to the students.

  • Students have been taking ownership of expectations relating to vandalism in the secondary schools this year. 


The Board asked the students to discuss student interaction with the superintendent and what the students would like to see in a new superintendent. Click here to view the discussion.
