About the SHMS IMC:

Spring Hill Middle School IMC

Entrance and OPAC stations

The SHMS Library or Instructional Media Center (IMC) houses all types of educational AV equipment and materials as well as over 13,500 books and magazines for informational and leisure reading for students and staff.  The media center has flexible scheduling, which allows students and staff to use the library at any time and enables classes to have more flexible times when signing up for research.  The IMC is completely automated with four online public access catalogs or OPAC stations.  Seating capacity is about sixty. Students are allowed to have three books checked out at a time but are given special permission to check out more if needed for research.  Reference material and magazines may be checked out for three days and books may be checkout for three weeks.  Students may renew items up to three times.

Library Media Specialists

Miss Sims is the librarian/media specialist and has been employed
at SHMS for 20 years. She received her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Education at Pittsburg State University and Master’s Degree in Library Science and Information Management from Emporia State University.

Mrs. Sobotka is the library aide.  This is her 7th year in that position and her 15th year with the school district.

The IMC serves more than 500 patrons each year and circulates, on the average, 43.50 items per patron during the school year.  Each year the library handles over 18,500 transactions.  All six-grade students come to the library at least once a week, usually on Thursdays, with their language arts teachers in order to check out books.  The library is also open each day during homeroom for students to check out as well as after school.

Monday, Oct. 16 to Thursday, Oct. 19

The PTO and Scholastic Book Fairs will hold a book fair in the SHMS Library, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 13th to the 16th during school hours.  The book fair will also be held during Parent/Teacher Conferences on Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 15th and 16th.  Parents, guardians, grandparents, siblings and friends are invited to attend!  If you come during school hours, please remember to check in at the office and get a visitor’s badge before coming to the fair.

Scholastic will be providing a wonderful selection of hardbound and paperback books.  There will be new releases, award-winning children’s books as well as classics and great nonfiction books.  The fair will also include bookmarks, educational activity books, sudoku puzzle books and more.  This will be a perfect time for students to get some reading materials to keep those brilliant minds sharp and active the year round.  Normally 50 to 60% of the fair profits will be given back, in the form of books, to the SHMS library collection.  Thanks for your support of SHMS and the library!

You might want to visit the following site to check out some of the highlighted books that we will have in the fair this year:

SHMS students participate in voting for the William Allen White Children’s Book Award.  All students will be encouraged to participate in reading at least three books from the William Allen White Book Award Master List.  They may vote for their favorite book in April.  The William Allen White Children’s Book Award program is  the oldest state reading program in the United States and is proud to have one of the highest student participation rates.  This year the program celebrates it’s 57th anniversary.
