K-State College of Engineering & Science Summer Institute
May 28-June 1, 2012
The purpose of the annual Engineering and Science Summer Institute (ESSI)is to create an opportunity for high school students to learn about engineering, as well as physics, chemistry, biology, and math. Various lectures and labs are offered by KSU faculty in an effort to illustrate some of the problems and challenges that face us in the next few decades. ESSI 2012 markes the 47th year the institute has introduced students to engineering and science.
The program is designed to aid the student in determining his/her interests both in college and beyond. The morning sessions will focus on career discovery and learning about the various engineering and science disciplines. The afternoon sessions provide a time to focus on the discipline in more detail using a laboratory experience.
Washburn Pre-Law Camp
This summer Washburn University will once again be hosting a Pre-Law Camp for high school students and incoming college freshmen July 16-19, 2012. The camp offers an enriching, educational, and fun opportunity for participants to learn about the study of law. The camp features lectures by faculty from both the pre-law and law school faculty, practicing attorneys, mock trial coaches, and current Washburn students that help campers understand what a legal education entails. Specific topics that are discussed during the camp include: How to apply for law school, How to prepare for the LSAT, How to survive a pre-law and a legal education, An overview of the legal rules of evidence, and An overview of intercollegiate Mock Trial. In an effort to apply knowledge gained during the camp and to hone communication skills, participants will also have the opportunity to prepare for and take part in an actual mock trial.
Cadet Law Enforcement Academy
The Cadet Law Enforcement Academy, co-sponsored by the Kansas American Legion, Auxiliary and Kansas Highway Patrol will be held at the Highway Patrol Training Center in Salina, June 10-15, 2012. Deadline for applications was March 31st and the $300 sponsor fee must accompany the application.
CLEA is not a recruitment device for law enforcement. Instead it offers high school juniors the opportunity to gain knowledge regarding training and responsibilities of all law enforcement officials. Upon graduation students should better understand, respect and appreciate law enforcement personnel at all levels.
To qualify for the Academy, applicants must be High School Juniors and must have a "C+" average scholastically for Sophomore and first semester of their Junior year, and be physically able to participate in all activities. Qualified instructors from the Highway Patrol, KBI, FBI and other law enforcement agencies are used throughout the week of instruction.
For additional information contact your local American Legion Post, or contact The Kansas American Legion Department Headquarters, 1314 SW Topeka, Blvd., Topeka, KS 66612, 785-232-9315
