General Scholarships

Non-Traditional Occupations Statewide Scholarship Competition

Kansas NTO Scholarship is a statewide competition to recognize outstanding male and female students who are enrolled in a career or technical program, which leads to high-wage, high-skill gender non-traditional occupational employment.

Gender Non-traditional occupations are defined as occupations or fields of work for which individuals from one gender comprise less than 25% of the individuals employed, as defined in Perkins IV legislation.   Examples are young women enrolled in building trades or automotive technology; or  young men enrolled in nursing or cosmetology.   A list of gender nontraditional occupations is located at: Scholarship

Four State winners will be selected.  The four State Winners (2 high school seniors, two community or technical college students) will each receive a $1,000 scholarship. 

Eligible applicants include college students and high school seniors who are currently enrolled or will be enrolled in a gender nontraditional career technical education program.  Students enrolled in short-term career technical education exploratory courses and previous Kansas Breaking Traditions Scholarship winners are not eligible.

Students must submit an essay of no more than 1000 words in answer to the following question:

What are your dreams for your future? When you look back on your life in thirty years, what would it take for you to consider your life successful?

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards 

Criteria:

  • Available for students who have shown outstanding volunteer service to their communities.
  • This program is available to students in grades 9-12.

Alzheimer’s Video Competition

  •  A moment in relation to Alzheimer’s disease when you learned something about your understanding of the disease, learned something about caregiving, or decided to become a community volunteer/activist.

Amount of Awards: $250-$500

Arthur & Bernedetha King Eagle Scout Scholarship 

 

Buick Achievers Scholarship 

 Open to all Eagle Scouts currently registered in an active unit and have not reached their 19th birthday during the year of the application.  Applications run Jan 1 to Dec 31 of each year.

 National High School Oratorical Contest

 A Constitutional speech contest.  High School Students compete for over $138,000 in scholarships.  This program helps students receive a better understanding of the United States Constitiution and gain a deeper respect and knowledge of duties as American citizens.

Speaking subjects must be on some aspect of the U.S. Constitution, with some emphasis on the duties and obligations of citizens to our government. Speeches are eight to 10 minutes long; three- to five-minute speeches on an assigned topic also are part of the contest.

Gates Millenium Scholars Program

 Criteria:

  • Are African American, American Indian/Alaska Native*, Asian Pacific Islander American** or Hispanic American
  • Are a citizen, national or legal permanent resident of the United States
  • Have attained a cumulative high school GPA of 3.3 on an unweighted 4.0 scale or have earned a GED
  • Will enroll for the first time at a U.S. located, accredited*** college or university (with the exception of students concurrently pursuing a high school diploma) in the fall of 2012 as a full-time, degree-seeking, first-year student. First-time college enrollees can also be GED recipients.
  • Have demonstrated leadership abilities through participation in community service, extracurricular, or other activities

Criteria:

  • high school seniors who have MS or who have a parent with MS
  • plan to attend an accredited post-secondary school for the first time

Sam Walton Community Scholarship

Criteria:

  • At least a 2.5 GPA.
  • Taken the ACT.
     

Amount of Award: $1000 locally, with chance to win $4000 at state level, and state winner going on to national level for another $25,000.

Alzheimer’s Awareness College Scholarship

 This scholarship provides an excellent opportunity for college-bound students  who are entering a 4 year accredited college to give thoughtful consideration to the impact Alzheimer’s disease has on their own lives and others in their family and community. Students are required to submit an autobiography and write a 1,200 to 1,500 word essay that answers the following questions:

  • How has Alzheimer’s disease changed or impacted your life?
  • What have you learned about yourself, your family and/or your community in the face of coping with Alzheimer’s disease?

 Educational Tours Global Citizens Award

 (an annual essay competition for college-bound high school seniors)
Criteria:

  • Nominees are asked to reflect upon and describe in a brief essay how a person in their community inspired them to live life as global citizens.
  • A single student will be selected to send his or her essay directly to EF, along with a completed application form.

Alegent Health Scholarship

Criteria:

  • High school seniors graduating May 2012 with intent to pursue a post secondary degree in a health care field.
  • Applicants must have applied to, and plan to enroll in an accredited college/university.
  • Applicants must have and maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 non-weighted scale.

GE-Reagan Foundation Scholarship

Criteria:

  • demonstrate exemplary leadership, drive, integrity, and citizenship at school, at home, at the workplace, and within the community;
  • be nominated by an eligible community leader, such as a high school principal, elected official or executive director of a nonprofit organization;
  • Be recommended by an authority figure, such as a student activity advisor, community service coordinator, coach, employer, teacher, counselor or religious leader;
  • demonstrate strong academic performance (3.0 or greater GPA or equivalent);
  • demonstrate financial need;
  • be a citizen of the United States of America;
  • graduate from high school in Winter 2011 or Spring 2012; and
  • use scholarship funds for student tuition, room, and board while pursuing a bachelor’s degree at an accredited U.S. college or university in Fall 2012.

Society of Professional Journalists Essay Contest

Criteria:

  • Be a student enrolled in grades 9-12 in U.S.

Janice M. Scott Memorial Fund

Criteria:

  • US citizen or permanent resident of US

BigSun Scholarship  

The BigSun Organization is proud to be able to continue to help young athletes succeed in their academic pursuits. We are offering an annual scholarship to a deserving student. All student athletes are eligible for this award, regardless of which sport they are participating in.

The successful applicant will be a high school senior or be attending a post secondary institute and currently involved in some sport at that institution or in the community.

To be considered eligible for the BBG Communications Scholarship you must:

Criteria:

  • The applicant's family must be actively engaged in the production of agriculture.
  • The applicant must have an average or above academic record, have a minimum of 18 on ACT, and pursue a field related to agriculture.
  • This scholarship is not based on financial need.

  • To the Eagle Scout who is selected “The American Legion Scout of the Year”.

Available to students in grades 5-12

  • Grade point average – indicate if you are taking AP classes
  • Scores on SAT general tests, SAT subject tests, AP tests (if applicable)
  • Honors/Awards – specify the level of your award (example: school, district, regional or national level award)
  • School activities/Leadership positions/ Sports involvement
  • Special interests, hobbies, community service
  • Students are encouraged to document their achievements by providing copies of report cards/transcripts, certificates of achievement, recommendation letters from teachers and/or counselors, etc. Volunteer work can be documented also.

Elks Lodge Most Valuable Student

The Elks National Foundation will award 500 four-year scholarships to the highest-rated applicants in the 2012 competition.

  • Any high school senior who is a citizen of the United States is eligible to apply.
  • Applicants need not be related to a member of the Elks.
  • College students are not eligible to apply.
  • Applicants must be citizens of the United States on the date their applications are signed; permanent legal resident status does not qualify.
  • Male and female students compete separately.

Applicants will be judged on scholarship, leadership, and financial need.

 "Freedom in Academia"  Essay Contest

The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) has announced the deadline for their annual "Freedom in Academia" high school student essay contest. They are looking for college-bound high school seniors to write an essay about how American universities betray the purpose of a university and violate the constitutional guarantees of free expression as depicted in two documentaries found at http://thefire.org/multimedia .  FIRE will award a $5,000 scholarship to the first place winner, a $2,500 scholarship to the second place winner, and five $1,000 scholarships to the runners-up. The essay must be 800--1,000 words long and is due November 5, 2011. Students may enter online at the following website.

 

 Catching the Dream Scholarhsip

Catching the Dream is an organization dedicated to helping Native American students attend and complete their college education. They offer three scholarships to students who are 1/4 or more Native American and who plan on attending a US college/university full-time.
