Where am I?

Keeping Our Students Safe

September 09, 2010

Student learning and safety are the two primary priorities at Spring Hill Elementary School. We constantly evaluate procedures to ensure our students are able to learn and grow in a safe environment.  In light of recent events in a neighboring district, school and district staff have carefully examined our school’s arrival and dismissal procedures.  In addition, we have worked closely with our School Resource Officer (SRO), Ken Oziah, to take a look at our crosswalks, parking lots, etc., to make sure they are as safe as possible.

Our school traffic map is included with this note.  I ask that you review the traffic flow and adhere to it at all times.  I am confident that student safety is as important to you, as it is to us.

Here are some minor, but important changes, which are helping us with our mission of providing a safe environment:

  • A thick, yellow line has been painted down the middle of the sidewalk at the Pre/K drop off and pick up.  Students are not to cross over the yellow line.  This provides a greater distance between students and cars.
  • Our teachers and staff are opening car doors at the Pre/K pick up.  Students are to remain behind the yellow line and not approach the car until the door is open.
  • At the start of the year, preschool pick up was moved further forward in the line to allow time for buckling in students and prevent cars from driving around the cars.
  • PTO, in partnership with Aaron Preuss (a local young adult who is working on his Eagle Scout Project), has purchased benches for the Webster pick up.  This will provide safe seating for the students as they await their cars to pull forward.
  • SRO Ken Oziah has spoken with the crossing guards and asked that all bicycle riders walk bicycles across the crosswalk.
  • The schools near the SHES campus also are working together to eliminate their students from riding through the Webster parking lot.  Students are being asked to use sidewalks.

Thank you for everything that you do to keep students safe.  If you have any questions, suggestions or concerns, please call at 592-7277 or email shes-info@usd230.org.
