Building Academic Vocabulary

 Building Academic Vocabulary is a district-wide program adopted as part of the 2008 strategic plan.  Based on work by Robert Marzano and Debra Pickering, this program gives a structured approach for helping students build background knowledge through direct vocabulary instruction with subject-specific terms.   These are terms that are critical to students’ success in every academic area, not just for one particular assignment or unit. 

 

Teachers use a six-step process for direct instruction in vocabulary in each discipline. For a further explanation, please view the six-step presentation.
