Hydroponics Plants

In April of last year, Spring Hill Elementary School received a grant from the Baehr Foundation, First Option Bank Trustee Services, for the first phase of a STEM Lab.  This grant provided Hydroponic Garden Kits and lights for grades 1-5.  The funds will also cover the cost to start a compost/recycling project.

The hydroponics units are maintained by the Environment Leadership Crew.    This crew, composed of students representing all grades, is responsible for all aspects of this project.  They tended the flowering plants and herbs from seeds and then transferred the plants into the hydroponic units.  Currently, they monitor and maintain water levels, PH levels, and feed the plants as needed.

This hands-on approach to learning encourages problem-solving, exploration, discovery and responsibility.  “We feel that this project will help us continue to meet the social/emotional needs of our students, while increasing academic success,” said Principal Tammy Endecott.

The dream for the STEM lab includes a raised garden, greenhouse, weather station, garden and bird watching cameras.  If you are interested in making a donation to this project please contact the Spring Hill Education Foundation, 913-592-7200, or make a donation online at https://www.usd230.org/community/spring_hill_education_foundation.
