District Receives Land Donation for New Elementary School
The Spring Hill School District received 18.2 acres of land at what will be 173rd and Brougham Drive, Olathe for a new elementary school, Timber Sage Creek Elementary.
The land was donated by Day3, LLC of Olathe. Superintendent Dr. Wayne Burke says, “The 18.2-acre property is perfectly located in an area of high growth for the school district. With Prairie Creek Elementary School at capacity and Wolf Creek Elementary School at near capacity, the new elementary school will relieve overcrowding at those two buildings.”
At the November 7 Board of Education meeting, the Spring Hill School Board voted unanimously to enter into a contract with Day3, LLC. This contract includes the donation of land at 173rd and Brougham, as well as an exchange of land. The School District will exchange the 5 acres where Hilltop Education Center resides for 19.25 acres near 173rd and Lindenwood. This land will be reserved for future district educational facilities. The exchange agreement allows the school district to continue to use Hilltop Education Center for a minimum of ten years.
The project timeline for the new elementary school calls for a 4-month design phase, with construction beginning in March 2017 for a completion date prior to the start of 2018-19 school year.
“This is going to be a positive for our community and our students. We cannot thank Day3, LLC enough for their generosity. The land acquisition of these two parcels is a zero-dollar exchange which will allow the district to meet the needs of a growing district, yet continue to reap the benefits of an older district building,” says Dr. Burke.
