Kindergarten Teacher
Winter is definitely here! I love this time of year, not necessarily because of the weather, but because of the learning that goes on. This time of year there are so many “Ah ha” moments! Things start coming together for the kids and they get so excited when they can read or do a math tasks with no help.
This is the time of year when I tell the kids we are getting ready for first grade. I confide that I taught first grade for a long time, so I can give them the inside scoop on what the first grade teachers expect. We have started working on writing our words smaller so we can get more than two or three words on a line. We are learning to read independently. This is a cool thing because we are able to use the strategies we have been practicing for half a year! We have even been talking about addition and subtraction in math. Every day we do an independent worksheet when we start math. It’s a great way to exercise our math brain!
If you are working with a kindergarten student at home, please read, read, read, with and to them. There is no better way to establish a love for reading than to enjoy it with someone who loves you and cheers you on as you dare to read harder books. I also recommend working on math Home Links when they come home, especially the games we will be learning. Anytime you can get math practice in a game form it helps the kids absorb the concept in a non-threatening form.
This is a great time of year to work with kindergarten students!
