What's Happening Second Quarter?

What's Happening Second Quarter in Fifth Grade?

Language Arts -- We will be studying concepts such as inferencing and compare and contrast.  The fun stories we will be reading are: Shiloh, Rattlers, Maya Lin, Black Cowboys, Wild Horses, Sleds on Boston Commons, Beyond the Horizon (a story about Kofi Annan), Esther Morris, My Great-Grandmother's Gourd, and Zathura.

Math -- Units 4, 5, 6  -- (Division, Fractions, and Data/Probability).  Please continue studying multiplication facts!  We have celebrated our Ice Cream Party for everyone who has worked hard at the end of Quarter 1.  We will also continue studying our Daily Math and other practice skills to get us ready for our Kansas Assessment in February. 

Science - We will be starting our discussion on Physical Science. Topics will include density, velocity, and mass.  Mrs. Kloepper will be conducting some fun, exciting labs for us to explore and inquire.

Social Studies - Our second quarter topics will include: Explorers (Marco Polo to Christopher Columbus), Jamestown, and the Mayflower.  We will also start studying about our 13 original colonies.  The students will work on many projects during these units.

Band and Orchestra Concerts will be held at 6:30 December 8th, 2011
