Art classes are in full swing at SHMS!!

"Visual Art is an attempt to come to terms with life.  There are as many solutions as there are human beings!"  Geoge Tooker

The SHMS Art Program encourages students, grades six through eighth, to engage in a variety of problem solving techniques.  With art being one of the first written forms of communication, there is a wonderful history rich with artists and art movements to satisfy any taste in art!

The Elements and Principles of Design are the foundation for any work of art.  These are incorporated in all of the projects generated in art class.  We work on 2-dimensional projects like perspective, face structure, still life, and abstract drawings and paintings.  Our 3-dimensional work comes in a variety of forms, such as pottery, basket weaving, and mobiles to name a few.

6th grade art students have been working diligently in a variety of art media!  Working in pencil to shade a vase to appear 3-dimensional, colored pencil apples are full of colors that help create the illusion of depth and dimension as do the oil pastel grapes.  I would have to say the oil pastels were probably their favorite tool . . . that is until we started painting!!  After the crayon landscape scene was completed, we started painting the interior of our room.  All these pieces of art will come together to create a scene that is truly spectacular!  Be watching the walls of the SHMS cafeteria for these master pieces!  Nov. 11 will be the end of the 1st trimester.

Seventh and eighth grade students are currently painting.  7th graders are making color wheels and key designs while 8th graders are utilizing color schemes to create a kaleidescope painting. 7th grade has very successfully completed work in 1- and 2-point perspective.  We will finish our trimester with scaling the human face!

Eighth graders participated in an intense drawing unit resulting in some pretty awesome shoe drawings!  We looked at a variety of color schemes before beginning our kaleidescopes.  Our trimester will finish up with pen and ink drawings.

Elective Art students completed our printmaking unit ~ IMPRESSIVE!!  It's always interesting to include the history of the artist and his time.  We studied German artist Albrect Durer ~ the Father of Line!  Our next 7 weeks is devoted to pottery.  These young artists couldn't be more excited!  Hand building techniques and wheel work will be explored.  Don't be surprised if you get a handmade piece of pottery for as a holiday gift!

Don't forget our big Winter Art Show!!  This year it will be Monday, Dec. 12th from 6 - 7 pm!  Be prepared to be AMAZED!!
