Touchmath
Touchmath is a program we use in jumpstart math to aid in adding and subtracting. Each digit from 1 through 9 has touchpoints corresponding to the digit’s quantity. Numbers 1-5 have single touchpoints and 6-9 use double touchpoints by a dot inside of a circle. Single touchpoints are counted once and double touchpoints are counted twice. When first learning touchmath, the students only put touchpoints on the smallest number when adding and subtracting.
Addition Example:
6
+ 2
1. Decide which number is smaller (2) and put two dots on the number 2.
2. Touch the largest number (6) and say 6.
3. Touch the first dot on 2 and count up saying 7.
4. Touch the second dot on 2 and say 8.
5. Record the answer 8 below the line.
Subtraction Example:
9
- 3
1. Decide which number is smaller (3) and put 3 dots on the number 3.
2. Touch the largest number (9) and say 9.
3. Touch the first dot on 3 and count backwards saying 8.
4. Touch the next dot on 3 and say 7.
5. Touch the next dot on 3 and say 6.
6. Record the answer 6 below the line.
