Junior and Senior English Instructor
Junior English explores American literature starting with the Puritan settlers and going through modern society. Americans’ changing relationships and attitudes are discussed in relation to eight common themes present in the literature. Major works include The Crucible, The Great Gatsby and A Raisin in the Sun. Class activities include discussion, group study and presentation, analysis of literature and research skills. A decade research paper will also include analysis of a novel that takes place during the decade. Additionally, each student will complete a Presentation of Learning speech at the end of the year. This presentation will include reflections on the literature studied, writing skills, grammar, and study and personal skills acquired throughout the year.
Jurniors are reading The Crucible 1st quarter and will be writing and producing a newscast based on the events of the Salem witch trials as portrayed in the play. During the 2nd quarter, students will be comparing and contrasting the literature of the American Romanticism period.
Senior English incorporates 21st Century skills, along with practical skills in: reading (British and world literature and non-fiction), technical and academic writing, listening, and problem solving. Through activities appealing to various learning styles, students will develop effective planning and communication skills appropriate to the work environment and college. Activities will include constructing a portfolio containing a personal reflection, a resume, a transcript, letters of recommendation and examples of academic excellence. Students will conduct a research project that includes thinking, creating, planning, interviewing, writing. Students will present their research through a speech, which incorporates various forms of technology. Students will also learn to develop and will practice self-management and interpersonal skills.
During the 1st quarter seniors will be creating their portfolio that includes a Personal code, personal reflections and academic items. In the 2nd quarter they will be doing a research project which includes an interview and a presentation of the research.
During the 3rd quarter, Seniors will be studying various genres of British literature from Beowulf to Macbeth to Mary Shelley's Frankensstein. In the 4th quarter they will be reading the novel Fallen Angels.
