Seventh Grade Language Arts
Course Description:
Language arts in seventh grade consists of a two-period block that combines literature, writing, language, and speaking. Students use literature as a springboard to writing and language. Our school-wide goals of reading comprehension, writing, and problem solving are interwoven within each unit of study. Whenever possible, workplace strategies are used to enhance learning. Emphasis is given to six-trait writing and narrative, expository, technical, and persuasive reading in preparation for our 7th grade Kansas Reading Assessment.
Literature Units:
Throughout the course of the year, students experience a variety of genres in literature such as short story, mythology, science fiction, poetry, and expository nonfiction. Emphasis is given to a variety of literary terms, reading strategies, problem solving strategies, and graphic organizers. Throughout the year, two novels are read which students write personal responses, participate in discussion, and engage in activities. All students read Maniac Magee early in the school year. Later in the year, small groups choose a novel to read and discuss. Outside reading and book reports are a part of seventh grade language arts. Students follow specific guidelines for a written summary and response. Below are the requirements for outside reading.
Writing Units:
Several writing units are intermingled with our literature throughout the year. We do a descriptive writing unit in which students write using all their senses and end up writing a story about an imaginary creature. With our Willy Wonka business unit, students work in divisions such as advertising to come up with creative ideas to enhance the business, write memos, and end with a business letter to Willy Wonka. In addition, using short narrative and expository pieces, students write one-pparagraph essay answers. During the 4th nine weeks, students express themselves through poetry.
Book Reports:
For each nine week period, students are required to turn in four book reports that total 600 pages. ( example: book 1 = 150 pages, book 2 = 200 pages, book 3 = 150 pages, book 4 = 100 pages) The form for the book report 4X6 card is on my moodle site. There are also more creative projects that can be substituted for three of the four book report cards. These also will be posted on my moodle site.
Moodle Site:
This is the site that has the helps that I have for students to use. It includes current and future assignments.
