Fifth Graders Tackle Rollercoaster Design

In Dustin Barnes' fifth grade classroom at Spring Hill Intermediate School, lessons learned in science were combined with fun activities as a way of reinforcing the curriculum. Barnes' students, who had learned about Newton's Laws of Motion, were challenged to integrate the laws into rollercoaster track design. As a follow up to the initial activity, students learned about potential energy, kinetic energy, and the transfer of energy. During Part 2 of the rollercoaster activity, the students had to use the laws of motion combined with the types of energy they learned about to construct working rollercoasters. The object was to keep a marble (the coaster) on the track until the end and then have it stop as close to the end as possible without rolling off or moving backward. Students' tracks also had to have at least two curves and one loop. Not only did this activity effectively demonstrate recent science lessons in a fun way but it was also a great team building exercise for the students.
